Section 1 Bradley and Keenan Roots in County Derry Ireland
The family branches out beyond its beginning in Beacon NY to many areas in New York State as well as New York City and the surrounding areas in Westchester and other Counties, Arizona, Florida, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Vermont and New Zealand
There are many, many Bradleys in Ireland! Thanks to Veronica Bradley who still lives in Ireland for telling us about them. Thank you, Veronica! While Edward Bradley, the father of those that immigrated to Beacon NY and Philadelphia PA, did not leave Ireland, neither did his family legacy. On Edward’s death record it says: Edward Bradley date of death unknown. His birthdate was June 27, 1878 in Tirhugh, Maghera, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. His mother and father were Joseph Bradley and Margaret O’Kane Bradley. His siblings Dominic Bradley born 1865-unknown when he died; James Bradley born 1866-unknown; Joseph Bradly born 1868-1906; Mary Elsie Bradley Fleming born 1874-1960; Bernard Bradley born 1874-1918; John A. Bradley born 1875-1911; Jane Bradley Gibson born 1877-1953; Michael Bradley born 1879-1907; Margaret Bradley 1883-unknown.
The Bradley’s that immigrated to Beacon, NY were children of Edward and Susan McTeague Bradley. All were born in Draperstown, County Derry Ireland and all immigrated during the period 1925-1930. Ed Bradley, the father, died in Ireland and shortly thereafter Susan, the mother, joined her children in Beacon NY and spent the rest of her life there. This is their story-hopefully we do it justice.
Susan McTeague Bradley is the daughter of Hugh Montague (born 1840) and Peggy O’Connor. Susan was one of seven children from this marriage. For more information on the other six children go to the Ireland tab on our website: http://www.montaguesofderry.com/ireland. We do note that Hugh had two wives and thirteen children. Susan was born June 3, 1875, baptized June 6, 1875. The Baptismal Sponsors were John Gallagher and Susan Hagan.
Susan married Edward Bradley on November 15, 1898 in St. Columb kille in Cahore. Edward was 20 years old and Susan was “full age.” Edward’s occupation at the time was a farmer. Edward and Susan had eight children. All 8 children, and their mother Susan, immigrated to Beacon, New York through the Port of New York.
Below is their marriage certificate. Hugh McTeague and Lawrence Bradley, fathers of the bride and groom were present.
It is important to note that Edward Bradley’s father is Lawrence Bradley per this marriage certificate. This is another tie to our letter writer, Annie Bradley, discussed in section 13 of this chapter and in the Ireland correspondence tab: http://www.montaguesofderry.com/ireland/correspondence.
We now know that Annie’s paternal grandfather is Susan McTeague Bradley’s father-in-law!
Here is a graphic of Susan and Edward’s family. Please note the letters/numbers above the left corner of each block on the left side. These represent the generations from James and Sarah Kelly McTeague in Ireland. James and Sarah’s children are SKM1 for Patrick McTeague and SKM2 for Hugh McTeague. As their generations are added a period and alternating letter and number is added. The good news is the branches of his family are very long. Reading from right to left you always get back to SKM-Sarah Kelly and James McTeague:
Here they are in the 1901 and 1911 Irish Census before immigrating:
Here is the 1901 Census. They are living at House 1 in Cahore (Draperstown, Londonderry)
